Cruise Covid Testing

Cruise Covid Testing

It can be difficult to understand the requirements for cruise Covid testing required for most cruise lines. It is not difficult to take a Covid test prior to your cruise.

These are the most recent testing requirements and policies as of 2022.

Sailing from the United States homeports

The following guidelines should be followed by guests sailing from the United States (except Puerto Rico):

For unvaccinated guests

All guests must have a negative Covid test from a PCR test. Rapid antigen tests are not accepted. PCR tests should be completed within three days before embarkation. Cruise Covid testing is not required for guests under 2 years old.

Important Note: Unvaccinated children can not be tested on the same day as embarkation.

For vaccinated guests

Vaccinated guests should show a negative Covid-19 Test no more than two days prior to embarkation. Children aged 5-11 years old must be fully vaccinated. Additional to the Covid test results, proof of vaccination must also be presented.

It doesn’t matter how many hours have passed since you took your test. The test will still be accepted even if you took your test on Thursday at 8 AM and your cruise leaves Saturday at 5 PM. Most major cruise lines count tests in days and not hours so it is okay if your test has been more than 50 hours since the time you board the ship.

The following should be included in the results of a Covid test:

  • Your name
  • Date and time the test was taken
  • Type of Covid tests
  • Negative results
  • Lab’s Certification or CLIA number
  • The lab address

What is the best way to present my test results?

You can either show your test results on a printed piece of paper or by calling the cruise terminal.

You must provide proof of recovery or a negative Covid test if you travel by air from another country.

A negative COVID-19 must be completed within one calendar day prior to traveling to the United States by air. This counts by days and not hours. If your flight departs at noon on Saturday, you can take a Covid test at any time Friday or Saturday morning.

Acceptable tests include both antigen and NAAT. Due to faster turnaround times before the flight, a rapid antigen test should be used.

You can provide documentation of your recovery if you have been free from Covid-19 within the last 90 days. These documents should include a positive Covid result no later than 90 days prior to the flight, and a letter from licensed healthcare providers confirming that the passenger is cleared to travel.

Important Note: Travelers entering the United States via land or sea are not required to pass a testing procedure. These requirements only apply to air travel.
